In a world that loves to indulge itself in endless possibilities, a world that brings medicine to the pinnacle of modern technology every day, a world that miss-usethese phenomena just as equally, humans invent new ways to cure and condemn one another.Medicine evolves every day, and many are as old as time itself. One of these long practiced procedures turned sci-fi is cosmetic surgery.
Cosmetic Surgery was first practiced in India by Sushruta “the father of surgery.” in 800BC, And again throughout the timeline of human history, through the reigns of the Rome, Greece, Egypt, and even Asia. Now, we seem to have traveled a long way, new laser procedures, and rapid recovery programs, cosmetic surgery is served on a silver platter but not without its price of course. In 2006 over 12 million cosmetic surgeries were performed. And since then the number has tripled resulting into a 12.8 billion dollar industry. The face of Cosmetic surgery today seems to be Michael Jackson, or Joan River, whom both haven’t aged in 20 years but their nose keeps shrinking, or Kim Kardashian televising her liposuction procedures, and on that note, any new TV star with new breasts and cheeks to match. It leaves a small piece of disdain in my heart knowing beautiful people are unable to age beautifully. I, for one, have been comfortable in my own skin since the day I was born, but I’m fortunate to have no physical deformities or mental impairments. Cosmetic surgery to me was automatically deemed unimportant in the medical field. I always felt the procedure was nothing more than the entertainment branch of the medical field. I only concluded this because of my sheltered living. My 85 year old grandmother abused every chance to get a face-lift. She was always so beautiful to me, and now she can barely manage an expression. I felt sorry for her, I wanted to help so badly, but it’s her life her body, her decision.I felt hatred towards cosmetic surgery, until I researched further. I realized it was originally created for experimentation, and those in dire need. Showing me what could be done with patience… and plastic. I was overwhelmed with the plethora of photos and stories from children and adults. All consumed by birth defects, deformities, and accidents dating back to the middle of the 1700’s. I immediately put a hold on my thought of glamorous individuals getting breast implants or face-lifts, and found the true meaning, help. People of all color, shape, and size use cosmetic surgery for help, either it’s for rhinoplasty for a sloppy slop of a nose, for a child’s cleft pallet,or a bad case of BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) people utilize this procedure because it makes them feel and look better. I found that there is no better motivation than a self-motivated individual. One who loves every fragment of their being, breeds confidence with every step, and shows it without hesitation. If all people need is a little collagen to bring them to a confidence level in which they can perform adequately, I only see positive outcomes. But then again I am Sheltered.
